Providing Clean and Available Water

Simple systems can be built relatively quickly with primarily volunteer labor, providing clean water that is much closer to the homes of those who need it. The method of constructing a system that would be typical for a spring fed water supply — two twelve by twelve by twelve foot concrete retaining structures with rocks and sand to filter the spring water, with pipes and spouts to help distribute the water and make it accessible.

The water would flow from one of these structures to the other; the first providing water for drinking and cooking and water flowing from the second container would be available to water livestock and wash clothing.

The cost for such a system would typically be about $10,000, with much of the labor provided by the villagers who would be able to use the water. The rainy season is in the summer months of June, July and August; it would be best to build the structures when the weather is drier, in October and November. Our plan is to raise the money this spring and summer, in time for the water system to be built starting this coming October.

It takes a community to help a community. Come help us raise money to create a water system in the village of our birth. Learn about our customs. Bring an Ethiopian potluck dish to share (see suggested recipes here). Your donations, whether big or small, will help us meet our goal. Everyone is welcome!
